Oxford Pockets

I found an Oxford Pocket Classic at a thrift shop. (Smaller than the Modern Library Classics --shown here underneath.)

This is a 1960 edition, and was priced at 7s 6d.
The s. must stand for shillings, ( and the d. for pence? ) I wonder what the equivalent pricing would be in 1960 in the USA?

I checked here, but was too lazy to do the math. Anyone?

By the mid 1980s Oxford had changed the book design. A bit cheaper and cheaper looking as well, but the books were the same size as the original pocket classics.

I haven't read Shirley yet. I did go through a Bronte phase years ago, and back then I preferred Ann's writing.

Hello!

I don't remember reading Charlotte Bronte, but I must have half-hearterdly read one of her books for school.

ps - How do you find the time to be an avid reader? It amazes me.

A R: I'll leave the math to somebody else.

Never read Shirley. But the style is so, so vedy vedy. "It would not do..." (not to mention the unwholesome dew itself) and "I should not mind." Fun, for the quaintness of it all - but does the story hold up? Prithy, do let us know. We should be delighted to hear.

You seem to have an unending supply of interesting books. I would love to see a picture of your home library. I can imagine it filling rooms!

Can you let me know how to join the electronic book club? If I recall you floated the idea out there a few weeks ago. I seem to have missed the details on how to sign up. Just send me an e-mail message at barbara.diskin@verizon.net. Thanks so much!

Neat find :)
I have not read that book. Have read Jane Eyre though ;)
Not as familiar with Anne and was not crazy about Wuthering Heights.

About yesterday's post...I also cannot stand marking in books!!
Highlighters are the worst. Heck,I don't even like to dog ear the pages :)

Avid the d was for penny. Still can't figure that money system out.

I'm about do for a Bronte re-read, I think. Time to savor some old favorites. But then my copy of Trout fishing in America arrived yesterday, so perhaps the sisters will have to wait a while longer...

I'm guessing that the book would cost 1.19 or 1.25 in the US in 1960. This based on nothing except prices I see on old books.

and then there's inflation or deflation.... oh the math has way too many layers of complications!
