Inauguration Reading

A new beginning. I've been reading Michelle an interesting book on Michelle Robinson Obama by Liz Mundy and Promises to Keep by Joe Biden. I saw the authors talking about their books and reading excerpts on Book TV and that got me hooked. I grabbed the Kindle and started reading. Biden is an excellent writer with a story to tell. I thought I was going to take a break from biography and memoirs. Not yet.

People are talking about this new way of thinking: ( after eight years of it's totally OK to be dumb and closed-minded. ) Now maybe it's a new beginning, a time to smarten up in all sorts of ways. be smarter about how we live, work, eat, and play. Be more open and compassionate. Have a respect for science.

There will be hard times ahead. We may need to rethink what The Good Life really means.

Read the excerpt of the interview in the top photo. Getting back to work over here, taking with me three quotes from it:

the one where Michelle says "we're here for the ride" - which strikes me as a good definition of what being alive is all about.

The one where Barack says "all my life, I've been stitching together a family," - because it resonates for me, or anyone else whose family is not candy cane traditional.

And the way he defines their relationship - the interplay of "tension between familiarity and mystery" - which is probably the best definition I've read of what keeps a couple in working order.

Best to you on this Inauguration Day.

Science and reasoned thinking. Spread them around. We're starved for them.

...Changing the way we work, live and play, and re-thinking what the good life really means...I think that is long overdue. Perhaps if we'd been careful to be reasoned, compassionate and ethical, we would not be in this mess. That said, newly-inaururated President Obama set the tone for sacrifice and personal responsibility in his speech.

Have a great inauguration day!
